The Mahamrityunjaya Mantra, also known as the Great Death-Conquering Mantra, Tryambakam Mantra, is a verse of the Rigveda. This Trimbak is addressed to the Trinity, an epithet of Rudra (later associated with Shiva). This verse is also found in Yajurveda. The Gayatri mantra, it is the best-known mantra in contemporary Hinduism. The great mantra dedicated to Shiva as Mrityunjaya is found in Rigveda. It is called Maha Mrityunjaya Mantra, Conqueror of Death.

ॐ त्र्यम्बकं यजामहे
सुगन्धिं पुष्टिवर्धनम् ।
उर्वारुकमिव बन्धनान्
मृत्योर्मुक्षीय मामृतात् ॥

This mantra has many names and forms.

• This is called Rudra Mantra, which refers to Shiva’s fiery vision;
• The Tryambakam mantra, refers to the three eyes of Shiva and is sometimes referred to as the mrita-sanjivani mantra because it is one of the “life-restoring” mantras given to the ancient sage Shukra after completing a severe austerity.
• Among the many mantras used for meditation, this mantra ranks supreme with the Gayatri mantra.

Meaning of Maha Mrityunjay Mantra

• We worship the three-eyed Shiva, the savior of the entire world. May Lord Shiva, who spreads fragrance on earth, save us from death, not moksha.
• Meaning of Mahamrityunjaya Mantra Varna (Aksharansh) Mahamrityunjaya Mantra has different meanings to its six parts – Akshara, Shloka, Ardha-Rich and Purna-Rich.
• The Om Tryambakam mantra has 33 letters which according to Maharishi Vasishta represent the 33 classes (types) of deities.
• Of those thirty-three deities, 8 are Vasus, 11 are Rudras and 12 are Adityas, 1 is Prajapati and 1 is Shatkara.
• All the powers of these thirty-three classes of deities are enshrined in the Mahamrityunjaya mantra. One who recites Mahamrityunjaya attains longevity. At the same time, he is healthy, and rich.

One who recites Mahamrityunjaya becomes happy and prosperous in all spheres. The nectar of Lord Shiva’s blessings began to rain incessantly.
